Tom Hardy is expected to return to his role as Harrigan family fixer Harry De Souza in the upcoming second season of MobLand, but reports indicate that he might not be back for the third season.

This week, it was revealed that, due to alleged behavior issues and creative clashes on the set of Season 2, Hardy has been fired from the as-yet-unconfirmed third season. Puck News first reported that the actor was canned after arriving late to set, offering unsolicited script changes, and clashing with executive producer Jez Butterworth. Then, The Hollywood Reporter revealed new details about the incidents that precipitated the ouster, including claims that Hardy would refuse to leave his trailer for hours, leaving other costars like Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren waiting for him. (THR reports, however, that Hardy’s fate is still as-yet-undetermined.)

If it is true that Hardy’s role will be phased out of the show, the question is how? Here are some very early speculative theories about how Harry De Souza might disappear from MobLand, with the caveat that a lot of this will depend on the events of Season 2, of course.

He could be killed off

There has been no shortage of major deaths on MobLand, even just in its first season. So far, the show has already killed off Tommy Stevenson (Felix Edwards), which triggered the war; the Harrigan family’s eldest son, Brendan (Daniel Betts); Harry’s right hand Kiko (Antonio GonzĂ¡lez Guerrero); the two investigators on the case, DC Ivan Fisk (Luke Mably) and DC Mukasa (Gemma Knight Jones); Vron (Annie Cooper); O’Hara Delaney (Lisa Dwan); Freddie Shaw (Bradley Turner); Alice Barnes (Emily Barber); the head of the rival Stevenson clan, Richie (Geoff Bell); and more.

Harry’s job is also intensely dangerous, as he navigates the criminal underbelly of London and beyond, dealing with some of the most vicious and bloodthirsty people in the world. So in a show where no one is safe, it’s entirely plausible he’ll be killed off somehow. Heck, his own wife accidentally stabbed him in a moment of frustration and confusion in the finale!

He could switch teams

We haven’t yet seen the events of Season 2, but it is expected that the series’ worldview will expand in Season 2.

The end of Season 1 revealed that there are many more players across the globe in this game. The Season 1 finale event ended with Harry earning the ire of Kat McAllister (Janet McTeer), a high-level and powerful gangster involved with the cartel. After calling her for a favor to save Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon) from Jaime (Jordi Mollà), and then to arrange a meeting for the Harrigans, she came to collect. Kat asked Harry to help her take down the Harrigans. However, he declined the offer, even after his own family was threatened, on account of his friendship with Kevin (Paddy Considine), who’s claiming the throne while his parents are in prison.

We have yet to see the true power of Kat and her associates, though, so there’s a chance he could eventually waver and join her team (or another), for better or for worse.

He could end up in jail

We know for sure that Colin Tattersall (Toby Jones) is a crooked cop who will do anything to take down the Harrigans. The finale indicated that his plan to put Conrad and Maeve in prison for a crime they did not commit may be foiled, thanks to Harry collecting a recording that shows the DNA evidence against them was falsified. So, perhaps Colin will resort to other measures to get to them … like framing Harry instead (or just finding proof of the various crimes he has committed on behalf of the family).

He could leave the crime world once and for all

Goodness knows Harry’s wife, Jan (Joanne Froggatt), is not a fan of his line of work, and, given the danger it put her and their daughter, Gina (Teddie Allen), in in Season 1, she’s probably not going to grow any more fond of it.

The Season 1 finale left off with Jan accidentally stabbing Harry during an argument, so clearly the tensions have completely boiled over after everything they went through in the Cotswalds amid the war with the Stevensons. The fact that Jan herself was duped by undercover agent Alice might even heighten the family’s need to get away, not to mention the threats from Kat. Perhaps Harry will wise up and take his family away from the violence at long last.

What do you think the likeliest outcome is for Harry De Souza if Tom Hardy does not return for MobLand Season 3?
