Season 5 of Ghosts delivered some major wins for Woodstone, but left the fate of a fan-favorite character uncertain in the two-part finale’s closing moments. Warning: Spoilers for the Ghosts Season 5 finale ahead!

Pete (Richie Moriarty), Woodstone’s resident arrow-skewered spirit, embarked on an important trip that finally revealed what happens when he strays too far from home for too long. As the Evercreek Water Company closed in on Woodstone, Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) scrambled to uncover a bit of historically significant information about their mansion to help designate it as a historical site, preventing it from being torn down or changed.

Ultimately, it’s revealed that Nancy (Betsy Sodaro) was a princess who had deserted her past life for the joy of civilian freedom. In order to help prove that chain of events, Sam and Jay are told by a historian (played by Saturday Night Live‘s James Austin Johnson) that they’ll need proof. That meant they’d have to travel to England and connect Nancy to her historical past with physical evidence.

“I think the words Fancy Nancy were kind of our north star with her backstory,” coshowrunner Joe Port reveals, “and we just thought that was funny, and we love Betsy Sodaro, and we love anytime she gets the chance to be in the show more,” he explains of her royal lineage.

The catch? Sam had been called up by Paula (Rose Abdoo), who revealed studios were interested in her movie, but wanted to make it a franchise, and in order to solidify her writing credit, Sam had to stay put at home. And so, Jay embarked with Pete and Kyle (Ben Feldman) to England, because Kyle could communicate with Pete as they sought out a painting that could connect a necklace Nancy kept at Woodstone with a painting in which she wore it.

While in England, Pete began to disappear, and although Kyle and Jay thought they’d make it back in time with Pete, by the time they were on the road, mere minutes from Woodstone, Pete, who was only a head at that point, fully disappeared in the backseat. While Woodstone was saved because of Pete sticking by Jay and Kyle, he seemingly paid with his ghost life…

But what happens next? Showrunners Port and Joe Wiseman were kind enough to offer some insights as Wiseman teases, “[Fans] will not have to wait. We’re gonna deal with [it].” Wiseman is referring to Ghosts‘ Season 6 future, which involves two holiday specials (Halloween and Christmas) before the regular episodes kick off in the midseason in early 2027.

“I know it was couched as midseason, but with these specials that are going to be an hour long, we’re basically just premiering two weeks later than we normally would,” Wiseman points out.

While it’s too early to say where the storylines will lead, Port adds, “We’re gonna pick up a couple of months after the finale took place, that’s where we’ll start, and we’re gonna go from there.”

As for why they decided to make Pete the centerpiece for Season 5’s cliffhanger, Wiseman notes, “It’s an interesting sort of Ghosts question that we set up from when we first found out about his power, like what happens if he disappears completely? And it felt like a really compelling end of the season to see one of our ghosts actually disappear, and we don’t know what’s gonna happen.”

Fans of the show know by now that when a ghost crosses over, it’s referred to as being “sucked off” and usually involves them being beamed upward into the sky. None of that occurred for Pete, so it’s unclear what his true fate would be. As for his comfort song, “Here I Go Again,” by Whitesnake, the showrunners thought it might be a silly addition, as Port notes, “[Pete] explains he sings it when he’s nervous because he was at a Whitesnake concert and there were a lot of people in line, so he got nervous.”

While Sam and Jay’s financial woes may be over with the future of her movie deal, Port points out, “It comes with the bittersweet moment where they won, but they’ve lost Pete, who’s basically sacrificed himself to save his friends.” As Sam gears up for the next chapter in her creative career, does this mean we’ll see more of the ghost-seeing Kyle?

“Our intent is to have more Kyle; we love that he comes in as the favored babysitter of the ghosts when Sam is otherwise occupied,” Wiseman shares. “And we’ve started developing his relationship more with Jay… So yes, we definitely are going to see more of Kyle.”

Fingers crossed, fans will also see more of Pete, but they’ll have to tune in this fall when Ghosts‘ holiday specials air on CBS. In the meantime, let us know what you think of the cliffhanger in the comments section below, and stay tuned for updates in the months ahead.
