MOULTONBOROUGH — Peter Lewis Wright, 77, a retired Coast Guard Reserve chief boatswain’s mate, of Moultonborough, went home to his Lord on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017, after a brief but courageous battle with mesothelioma.
Peter was born on Oct. 29, 1939, in Center Sandwich, to Jonathan IV and Barbara (Smith) Wright.
Peter graduated from Meriden High School (Meriden, Connecticut) in 1958 and enlisted in the Navy following graduation.
On Oct. 19, 1963, he married the former Karen Mussmann in York, Pennsylvania.
After his Naval service, Peter worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in New Haven, Connecticut, and then moved to York, Pennsylvania, where he was employed at Caterpillar Tractor Co. as a quality control Inspector. He retired from Caterpillar in 1997 after a 30-year career.
Peter joined the United States Coast Guard Reserves in 1974 and retired from the Coast Guard in 1999.
Following his retirement, Peter and Karen moved to Moultonborough. Not one to be idle, Peter proudly served on many boards over the years — Moultonborough Planning Board, Sandwich Historical Society, Community Church of Sandwich, Rural Cemetery Association, State Fair Association and the Sandwich Fair Association. Peter also worked for the town of Moultonborough as the caretaker of the town’s cemeteries.
Peter is survived by his wife, Karen of 54 years; a son, Jonathan of Bethlehem; a daughter, Jennifer of Sandwich; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Peter was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, in the Community Church of Sandwich (Methodist Meetinghouse), 6 Main St., Center Sandwich, with Pastor Mark Whitman Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Rural Cemetery on Church Street in Sandwich.
It was Peter’s wish that memorials be made to either the Community Church of Sandwich or the Sandwich Historical Society.
A special thank you to the Hospice House in Concord for their loving care and support.
The Mayhew Funeral Homes and Meredith Bay Crematorium are assisting the family with arrangements. To view Peter’s book of memories, go to www.mayhewfuneralhomes.com.
