John "Jack" H. Reid Sr., 94, of Alexandria, died peacefully surrounded by his loving children Oct. 7 at the VA Hospital in Tilton after a long illness. Jack was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and he was the son of the late Roland Reid Sr., and Marion (Sheerin) Reid. As a young man, Jack was an avid sportsman who loved kayak racing, sailing, hunting, skiing and fishing. He graduated from Jamacia Plain High School in Boston, Massachusetts, and served in the US Army.
Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Kathleen M. (Sheehan) Reid; daughter, Nancy J. Reid; a daughter-in-law, Julie Reid; a son-in-law, George P. Huntoon; and a granddaughter, Jennifer (Reid) Walker. Jack is survived by eight of his nine children: John H. Reid, Jr. and Joyce, of Litchfield; Elizabeth R. Morrison and John P. of Bristol; Robert G. Reid and Beryl, of Alexandria; Kellie A. Braconier and Karl, of Hebron; Theresa K. Reid of Wynantskill, New York; Karen M. Huntoon and George, of Dover, Massachusetts; David M. Reid and Cindy, of Laconia; and Peter L. Reid and Melissa, of New Hampton; 23 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild as well as a brother and sister in-law and many nieces and nephews.
Jack served as a police officer in Needham, Massachusetts, where he won many awards for his marksmanship. Later, when he and his family moved to Alexandria, New Hampshire, in 1971, he owned his own business, J Reid & Sons Concrete. Upon retiring, Jack could be found puttering in his garden growing flowers for his wife, as well as fruits and vegetables. Jack continued his love of kayaking, sailing and skiing well into his 80s.
Visiting hours will be held at Marian Center, 17 West Shore Road, Bristol, on Tuesday, Oct. 17, from 9-10 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial begins at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Grace Chapel, 2 West Shore Road. Please join the children and family of Jack Reid for a luncheon at the Marian Center after the Mass. Â
The children have requested a private family internment service at New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
