Joan N. Waite, 93, of Bedford, Massachusetts, passed away on Oct. 2, 2026, after a long and full life that she lived very much on her own terms and to the fullest until the very end.

Born in Franklin, to Leon and Beatrice Flanders, Joan made Bedford her home in 1960 when she married her husband, William H. Waite. Together, they raised their four sons in a town that Joan grew to love and remained deeply connected to for more than 60 years. Joan took great interest in the Bedford community and the people around her. Over the years, she was involved with the Bedford Garden Club, the Salvation Army, and the Bedford Council on Aging. She especially enjoyed the Council's Current Events discussions. Few things happened around town without her knowing about them, and she could always be counted on to tell you what was new, what had changed, and often a little of the history behind it.

Her faith was an important part of Joan's life. She was a devoted member of St. Michael Parish, where attending daily Mass was especially meaningful to her, often followed by coffee and conversation with friends. Over the years, she served the parish in many ways, including as a religious education teacher, eucharistic minister, and longtime member of the women’s club. She gave generously of her time to Families helping Families at Christmas, Thanksgiving food baskets and the parish’s Pine Street Inn program serving those experiencing homelessness in Boston. Her faith was reflected in her kindness, her service to others, and her genuine desire to help anyone in need.

Family was at the center of Joan's life. She loved spending time with her sons and their families and took great pride in watching her family grow to include eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Joan had a wonderfully dry wit and a sense of humor that stayed with her throughout her life. Her caregivers knew this well, and she frequently had them laughing. She was also genuinely interested in people. Joan treated everyone with kindness and respect and rarely had an unkind word to say about anyone. It was simply the way she lived her life.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, William H. Waite, and her granddaughter, Colleen Waite. She is survived by her four sons, William H. Waite Jr. and his wife Ethel of Bedford, Massachusetts; Myron P. Waite II and his wife Stacey of Westford, Massachusetts; John P. Waite and his wife Brenda of Tewksbury, Massachusetts; and James Waite of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. She was the proud grandmother of Stephen Waite, Cory Waite, Benjamin Waite, Katelyn Weese, Taylor Invernizzi, Courtney Theberge, Morgan Waite, and the late Colleen Waite. She also leaves five great-grandchildren and an extended family she loved dearly. She was the sister of Bradley Flanders and the late Leon Flanders and Vivian Brassard.

Even at 93, Joan remained interested in the people and world around her. She valued her independence, her family, her community, and the many relationships she made along the way.

After more than six decades in Bedford, she leaves behind a family who loved her deeply and many memories in the town she was proud to call home.

Visitation will be held from the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Road, Bedford, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Michael Church, 90 Concord Road, Bedford, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9.
