Jane (Leavitt) McGonagle Quimby, 88, of Gilbert, Arizona, died on Nov. 25, 2025, at her home at Sunrise of Chandler, Chandler, Arizona. Jane died from complications from dementia.
Jane was born on June 11, 1937, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Dr. Jerome and Mrs. Veronica (Mercier) Leavitt.
As a teenager, Jane worked as a lifeguard at a beach in Laconia. She was credited with saving at least one swimmer from drowning.
Jane was a talented singer and actress. She performed in many plays and sang at friends' weddings.
Jane graduated from Plymouth Teachers College, Plymouth, in 1959. She taught in elementary school in Connecticut, Virginia, New Hampshire, and Arizona. In Virginia, Jane (with first husband Joseph McGonagle) purchased and ran a private elementary school. She was the principal, teacher and school bus driver. In Gilmanton, Jane taught kindergarten in the one-room space above the town fire department. She taught at both Gilford Elementary and Gilford Middle High schools before she moved to Arizona. She retired from Avondale Elementary School in 2003.
Jane is survived by her four children, Michael McGonagle (wife Julie), Marci Beaudoin (husband Alan), Meg Diltz (husband Greg), and Martin McGonagle (wife Kimberly); 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
