CENTER SANDWICH — James "Jim," "Jimmy" Roger Calley, 68 years, two months, and 11 days old, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home with his wife by his side on March 16, 2026.

James was born on Jan. 5, 1958, in Laconia, the son of Gloyd and Janet (Plummer) Calley. He attended the Laconia School System, graduating in 1976, where he formed many lifelong friendships. At just 20 years old he met Audrey, hoping to marry her one day. In 1996, after years of friendship, they eloped. She was his true love.

In his younger years, Jim worked cleaning the Laconia Court House at night, Bud’s Gulf, Barney’s Ice Cream, Malibu Iron and Allen Rogers. He obtained his plumber’s license via night school. Jim worked for Vallier Plumbing & Heating before joining P&S Local 131 until his retirement at 65. Throughout his career with Local 131 he traveled up and down the east coast working at nuclear power plants (jokingly known as bomb plants), and various commercial buildings while making numerous friends. He was known for his mechanical knowledge, sense of humor, quick wit, and being “kinda a big deal.”

He was most happy at home watching the news to keep tabs on Trump’s disasters and meticulously maintaining his land, with a cold Busch nearby. His retirement gift for himself, with Audrey’s approval, was his beloved excavator.

Jim enjoyed a good meal, often eating “clean up,” and washing it down with Diet Coke. He had a sweet tooth for Chunky bars, Hershey’s chocolates and Oreos (with his Diet Coke). His 68th birthday cake was shared with his BFF Poppy, at her request and decorated by her. A special moment they shared together.

He loved being a Papa to Trevor, Morgan, Cannon, Chase, Piper, Poppy and Ayla, with another on the way. He could often be found exploring the woods by four-wheeler or foot, with kids in tow, catching frogs, looking for bugs and getting muddy. There was never a shortage of tractor rides or freeze pops.

Jim is survived by his wife of 29 years, Audrey (Boutwell) Calley; children Katie Smith and her husband Smitty, Carly Stanford and her husband Tim, Cody Whitcher and his wife Sarah, and Robin Howe; his mother, Janet Calley; sister Susan Simmons; brother Steven Calley and his wife Tammy; seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his father, Gloyd Calley, and his brother, Jonathan Calley.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, in the Carriage House at Wilkinson-Beane-Simoneau-Paquette Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia,.
