Colleen Patricia Bownes passed away peacefully on Feb. 23, 2025, surrounded by her husband, two children, sister and niece.
She was born on Oct. 10, 1954, in Riverside, New Jersey, to parents Clara and Eugene Trainor. She grew up in Roebling, New Jersey, along with her younger sister Kimberly. Raised a true Jersey girl, Colleen and her family spent their summers in Wildwood on the Jersey Shore.
Colleen’s fire for equality was evident in her childhood when she successfully petitioned her school to allow girls to wear pants. A class officer and active member of student government, Colleen graduated from Florence High School in 1973. She attended Plymouth State College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education in 1978. There, she fostered her lifelong passion for teaching.
Colleen began her career in Gilford, as a kindergarten teacher and started the kindergarten program in Gilmanton, soon after. Over her 40+ year career, she was a para, ran a daycare, and taught pre-school and kindergarten across the Lakes Region. Colleen’s lifelong commitment to education and the betterment of her community was reflected in her service with the Nursery Guild, UU Church, Ladies of the Lake, and the Greater Lakes Region Children’s Auction.
A lifelong learner, Colleen's contagious love for life and passion for joy led her to embrace exciting experiences such as studying in Ireland, driving across the country with a good friend, and exploring England. She enjoyed traveling to see family and friends and spending her retired winters in Florida with her husband.
In the summer of 1987, Colleen met the love of her life, fellow educator Ernie Bownes. Visiting Laconia from his job in England, Ernie invited Colleen to join him in London for the Christmas holidays. Lucky for him, she said yes. The two were married on Aug. 19, 1989, in Laconia. They had their first child, Erinn, in 1991 and their second child, Moss, in 1994.
As a wife, mother and friend, Colleen was among the best. She was endlessly supportive and encouraged everyone to be their own unique selves. Her unconditional love for and acceptance of her children should be held in the highest regard. Colleen’s excellence as a mother extended to anyone who needed a safe space. There was always a warm and welcoming hug and a seat at her table for you. Colleen was a cheerleader for all who practiced and preached inclusion and acceptance.
Colleen is survived by her loving husband and soulmate, Ernie Bownes; her child Moss Bownes; her daughter Erinn Michaelson; her sister Kimberly Trainor; along with beloved nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A wonderful mother and great friend, her glowing smile and lovely blue eyes brought joy to everyone she met. Her kind soul and heart touched us all.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Colleen had a sparlking personality and could brighten up any gathering. She will be missed.
Colleen’s laughter, her kindness, and her love for life touched everyone around her. I feel so grateful for the time we had together, for every conversation, every adventure, and every quiet moment of companionship. Though her time with us was far too short, her spirit lives on in all the places we loved and in the countless memories we created.
