LACONIA — Balbir Singh Oberoi, 87, of Pendleton Road, passed away at his home on Jan. 29, 2024.
Balbir was born on Feb. 5, 1936, in Prome, Burma, the son of Ishar Singh Oberoi and Uttam Kaur. He graduated from the University of Rangoon with a degree in civil engineering.
After emigrating from Burma and India, he briefly lived in Munich before settling in Manhattan in 1965 where he took night classes for computer programming and worked for various companies such as Pan American, American Express and Lufthansa. He then relocated to Rhode Island in 1977 where he worked for Allendale Insurance/FM Global as a systems analyst until retiring in 1999. He then returned to Manhattan where he worked for the New York Times as a COBOL specialist and held various IT consulting roles, until returning to FM Global in Rhode Island before retiring for good. He enjoyed several years in Florida before finally calling Laconia his home in 2019.
He enjoyed travel, reading, classical music, perfecting his German and spending time with his family.
Balbir is survived by his loving wife, Virginia (Frost) Oberoi; his children, Shyam, and his wife Mandy; Krishan, and his wife Kirsten; and Rajni, and her husband Eli; and his four grandchildren Maya Oberoi, Rami Oberoi, Jameela Oberoi Sentman, and Soleini Oberoi Sentman. In addition to his parents, Balbir is predeceased by his brother Prem Singh Oberoi.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the Lakes Region Visiting Nurse Association, in particular Elaine Cartier, RN, and Abby Smith, CNA, for their care and comfort rendered to Balbir during his time at home on hospice care.
There will be no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 22, at 10 a.m., at St. Andre Bessette – Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Ave.
