MEREDITH — Two annual events highlight the September schedule for the Meredith Historical Society.
First, the society’s annual open house will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 5-7 p.m. at Meredith’s Main Street Museum. Then in mid-September, the society will hold its historic boat tours on Lake Winnipesaukee — this year following the route of early mail boats.
As in previous years, the open house will feature free hotdogs, chips, and other goodies. Additionally, the museum will be open to anyone who wishes to visit, including this year’s display highlighting Bob Montana, creator of “Archie” comics. Historical Society board members and volunteers will be there to chat and to answer any questions. Local history authors will be on hand to sign copies of their books.
This year’s boat cruises will depart from the Goodhue Marina on Meredith Neck at 12:30 p.m. Dates are Tuesday, Sept. 9 (rain date Thursday, Sept. 11), and Tuesday, Sept. 16 (rain date Thursday, Sept. 18). This year, the tours will follow the route of historic mail boats like the Uncle Sam and the Sophie C.
Historical commentary will be provided by Jane Rice, John Hopper and Rudy VanVeghten. Each cruise will be limited to 40 passengers aboard the good ship Bear II, courtesy of Camps Lawrence and Nokomis.
“It is always a great delight for us to host these annual events,” said Hopper. “Our membership is critical to the success and sustainability of the Historical Society. Implicit in our mission is the role of being the physical link that connects and perpetuates Meredith’s remarkable past with its amazing present as a world-class vacation center.”
Proceeds of the boat tours go toward the society’s mission to preserve, develop and promote the knowledge and awareness of the town’s rich history through educational programs, museum collections, original historical research and publications, and an expanding library of digital and traditional resources.
