MEREDITH — The League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, Meredith Fine Craft Gallery is excited to introduce newly juried jewelry artist Nurlan Kazbalinov and invites craft lovers to explore the deep cultural roots through his intricate hand-made jewelry.

Kazbalinov is a jeweler from Kazakhstan who learned the craft from his brother-in-law at the age of 21. What started as an apprenticeship soon became a lifelong profession and dedication to the art of jewelry making. He specializes in traditional techniques such as hot enameling, granulation, and filigree. In 2003, he graduated from a jewelry arts program in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and for the past four years has been living in the United States. Since moving here, he has worked in New York City, conducting workshops to share his knowledge and experience with aspiring jewelers. Having participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, Kazbalinov has recently settled in New Hampshire and joined the League of NH Craftsmen to showcase his craftsmanship and preserve the rich traditions of handmade jewelry artistry.

His designs make use of traditional Kazakh symbols and ornaments. These intricate patterns reflect the history, beliefs, and cultural values of the nomadic people of the Great Steppe. One of Kazbalinov's earring designs features a Shanyrak, which is the central opening at the top of a yurt. It is one of the most important symbols in Kazakh culture, representing home, family, unity, and the connection between generations. Traditional Kazakh earrings often feature small dangling pieces that create a gentle ringing sound when worn, and Kazbalinov's are no different. According to ancient beliefs, this delicate chime helped ward off evil spirits and negative influences, giving the jewelry both a decorative and protective purpose. By incorporating these ancient symbols and forms into his jewelry, he preserves and celebrates Kazakhstan’s rich cultural heritage while connecting the past with the present.

Kazbalinov is the father of two sons who have followed in his footsteps, choosing jewelry making as their own profession. Today, the Kazbalinov family continues a shared commitment to traditional craftsmanship and artistic excellence.
