In a show of corporate confidence in, and commitment to, the economic success of the Lakes Region, Madeira USA, based In Laconia, has joined the Belknap County Economic Development Council (BCEDC). Seeing the Council as an integral part of sustaining the region and contributing to the economic growth of the area, Hajo Voeller, president of Madeira USA, decided the timing was right for the firm to become an investor in the council, joining a very distinguished list of corporations, professionals and benefactors throughout the region.

Madeira USA is the United States subsidiary of Freiburg, Germany-based Madeira Garnfabrik, a world leader in the manufacture of embroidery thread. As the 85-year old Madeira Garnfabrik grew worldwide, it recognized the benefit of establishing bases of operation in many countries, including the U.S. In 1984, Madeira USA in Laconia became the U.S. headquarters for Madeira. It has since grown from a company of three employees, to one that employs over 50.

Madeira USA will celebrate its 20th anniversary this August. It contributes significantly to the economic well being of the Lakes Region by employing over 30 people. In addition to its Laconia base, the company operates customer service centers in Fresno, Calif.; Columbus, Ohio; Arlington, Texas; and Jacksonville, Florida; and utilizes a network of distributors throughout the country. Madeira maintains a distinguished reputation for being a leading provider of rayon, polyester and specialty embroidery threads, as well as embroidery accessories such as backing, toppings, needles and more for industrial use.

“When I learned about the good work of the BCEDC, about how it endeavors to promote business development in the area, and for partnerships in order to grow businesses, I felt there was a great compatibility between the way the Council works and the way we do at Madeira," Voeller said. "Here, we also try to work as a team in order to foster an atmosphere of pro-active thinking in order to accomplish our goals. I see the BCEDC as a very goal-oriented organization, one with which Madeira USA is very proud to partner.”
