SANBORNTON — On Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m., one of Sanbornton's illustrious citizens, Walter Ingalls, distinguished portrait painter of the mid-19th century, will be Sanbornton Historical Society's program topic.
Ingalls, born in Canterbury in 1805, moved to Sanbornton in 1818 and along with his brother became a cabinetmaker. That profession was short-lived when Walter's true talent for painting became his career. Over the next 41 years, he traveled the world painting portraits of kings, popes, emperors, statesmen, and, of course, numerous Sanbornton family members of the 1800s. President George Washington's portrait in the New Hampshire Statehouse is Walter Ingalls' work. Ingalls also served as Town Moderator from 1840-47, and was a member of the General Court at the Statehouse from 1847-48.
Come to Lane Tavern at 520 Sanborn Road for historic information delightfully presented by Brendan Morrison and Karey Caldwell. It is handicapped accessible and air-conditioned. Light refreshments will be served after. The program is free, with donations toward historical society costs appreciated. All are welcome.
