MILFORD — Be part of tennis history and celebrate New Hampshire Tennis Hall of Fame's inaugural class at Hampshire Hills Athletic Club in Milford on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22, with a doubles championship tournament and luncheon induction ceremony.
Alan Chandronnait, Charles "Whitey" Joslin and the late Katharine "Kay" Hubbell will be inducted into the newly-established state hall of fame on Sept. 21 at noon. Tournament play also begins Saturday, with the semis and finals on Sunday.
The inductees were chosen by USTA New Hampshire from an outstanding pool of nominees.
Chandronnait, a former tour player who has coached adults and juniors for 35 years, lives in Bow. The New Hampshire native was instrumental in developing the first USTA Junior Area Training Center for NH and northern Massachusetts. This center unified the top junior players in the region, earning him the USPTA/New England Northern Pro of the Year award. In 2006, he was inducted into the New England Tennis Hall of Fame.
Joslin, a distinguished coach, tennis director and club owner, lives in Loudon. Since moving to New Hampshire in 1980, Joslin has worked at The Racquet Club of Concord, Great Bay Athletic Club, and Monadnock Indoor Tennis Club. In 1997, he purchased Mountainside Racquet and Fitness Center in New London. Joslin dedicated many years to coaching high school teams, including Concord High, Kearsarge High, and Proctor Academy, as well as coaching for Granite State Kids. Joslin was inducted into the New England Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007.Â
Hubbell, a Wimbledon semifinalist and youth tennis coach, lived in Conway. She trained on grass at the Longwood Club in Boston and played on clay courts at her parents vacation home in Tamworth. At Vassar College, she won the national intercollegiate singles and doubles titles from 1940 to 1942. Hubbell competed in singles and doubles at Wimbledon, reaching the women's doubles semifinals in 1954. She won the U.S. Women's Indoor Championship singles title in 1955. Hubbell died in 2017 at age 95.
Players and guests will enjoy a deluxe BBQ luncheon during the induction ceremony Saturday from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the outdoor patio. Men's and women's A (4.0/4.5+) and B (3.0-3.5) divisions will compete on the red clay courts. In the event of rain, the ceremony and tournament will be held indoors.
