WOLFEBORO — Makers Mill is strengthening its community impact through a growing connection with Granite State Adaptive, supporting adaptive cycling through bike repair, maintenance and education.
The connection was sparked by Makers Mill member and Bike & Ski Bench Circle Leader Bob Mathes. After volunteering at a Makers Mill Repair Café and fixing an adaptive bike, Mathes became aware of GSA’s need for ongoing maintenance support.
Granite State Adaptive, a Mirror Lake-based nonprofit, provides adaptive cycling and outdoor experiences for individuals with disabilities, helping participants build independence, confidence, and fitness.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the time and energy that Bob is putting into maintaining our bikes and for the opportunity he has to do this work at Makers Mill,” said GSA Director Jennifer Fraser.
Mathes brings both technical expertise and a passion for teaching. During a three-month cycling trip, he found himself frequently repairing flat tires for fellow riders. Rather than just fixing the problem, he began teaching others how to do it themselves.
“People who love to bike ought to know how to do this,” said Mathes.
That philosophy continues at Makers Mill. Mathes will teach Bicycle Pre-Ride Inspection & Maintenance on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to noon and Monday, May 4, from 5 to 7 p.m., helping community members build confidence in maintaining their own bikes.
“I saw a group of GSA cyclists along the Cottonwood Trail, people of all ages and abilities out riding together, clearly enjoying themselves,” said Jill Kanyuk, member of Makers Mill’s board of directors. “It was a beautiful scene, and it stayed with me.”
The Makers Mill Bike & Ski Bench supports both community partnerships and member learning, offering seasonal classes, summer support hours, and access to tools for bike and ski maintenance.
The collaboration with GSA reflects Makers Mill’s commitment to access and collaboration. The makerspace continues to improve accessibility, with features including an elevator, ADA-compliant bathroom, and inclusive programming such as Adaptive Arts for Young Adults.
Makers Mill is a community makerspace in Wolfeboro offering access to tools, classes, and collaborative opportunities that support creativity, skill-building, and community connection. Free tours are offered every Friday and on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m.
