LACONIA — The Laconia Public Library will offer several programs during the month of June.
June 8: 'The Art of Erling Saevarsson' display
See the newest Rotunda Exhibit, featuring the art of Erling Ingi Sævarsson — an experienced illustrator, concept artist, animator, and lecturer based in New England. He holds a master's of fine arts degree in illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Through his company Magma Creations, a name that honors both his Icelandic heritage and the creative energy of nature, Erling collaborates with a diverse range of clients in the entertainment and advertising industries, bringing their visions to life through thoughtful design and captivating illustration. In addition to his professional practice, Erling serves as a lecturer at Tufts University, where he shares his expertise with the next generation of artists and designers. His work has been recognized in a number of prestigious publications, and will be on display at the library from Monday, June 8 through August.
June 11: The Common Loon: A New Hampshire Icon presentation
Join the Loon Preservation Committee at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 11. For many, the haunting call of the loon is an important part of the New Hampshire lake experience. Often seen as a symbol of the northern wilderness, loons are a beloved fixture on New Hampshire lakes, and many lake-goers enjoy watching them as they raise their young. However, the breeding season can be a vulnerable time for loons; they face many threats while on our lakes. This presentation will focus on the biology and life history of loons, the threats that loons face, and the work that the Loon Preservation Committee and their volunteers have performed since 1975 to help recover New Hampshire's threatened loon population.
June 17: Mediterranean Eats: Your Path to Wellness
Join Braelynne Jurius and a Hannaford registered dietitian to learn about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17. Often considered more of a lifestyle, it encourages foods which may help lower cholesterol, assist in weight management, help stabilize blood sugars and boost cognitive function among other benefits. No sign-up is required.
June 25: Jordan TW Trio at The Colonial Theatre
Laconia Public Library will bring The Jordan TW Trio to the stage at the Colonial Theatre, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 25. The concert is free, no tickets are required, concessions will be available for purchase, and all are welcome to attend. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. with seating made available on a first-come, first-served basis. The concert was made possible, in part, by donations made in memory of Elizabeth “Betty” Derby.
The Jordan TW Trio delivers a dynamic show, putting a fresh spin on traditional Celtic music, full of lively fiddle tunes, haunting airs, and classic singalongs. In 2013, Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki was awarded the title of “Master Artist” by the New Hampshire State Council On the Arts and later named “Best Fiddler 2016” by New Hampshire Magazine. He composed the New England Emmy-nominated theme music for WMUR’s "New Hampshire Chronicle," and the Jordan TW Trio formed the core band that recorded it.
The Jordan TW Trio have appeared live on NHPR’s “The Folk Show.” Their albums can be heard on radio stations around the British Isles, as well as back home in New England. The Trio have blended the music of Ireland and Scotland with their own original material for over a decade. The amalgam of genres produces a unique sound described as “brisk, lean, and exceedingly lovely” by Boston Irish Reporter.
The Laconia Public Library is at 695 N. Main St. For more information, call 603-524-4775 or email info@laconialibrary.org.
