Heritage commission brings America250 celebration to bandstand

BELMONT — The Belmont Heritage Commission will present the Newmont Military Band to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. The concert will take place at the Belmont Historical Bandstand on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m.

The Newmont Military Band is a period style brass and reed ensemble. Going back in time to the late 19th century, the Newmont Military Band plays a repertoire of songs and marches once heard at bandstands town green programs many years ago.

The band brings life to its program by explaining how the period music relates to historical events of that time. Some of the past venues of the Newmont Military Band has been the Shelburne Museum , Windsor Heritage Days and the Gettysburg Band Festival. The members of the band come from Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. They are neighbors and friends and from all walks of life. They are sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, most are professionals in today’s workforce as were the members of the old bands who were farmers, blacksmiths and colonial workers.

The Heritage Commission welcomes all to this venue as we help to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Commission also wishes to thank art teachers Mrs. Van Cura from Belmont Elementary School and Ms. Lewis from Belmont Middle School for assisting their students in creating and providing patriotic art work. The student’s art work will decorate Belmont Village and the area around the town’s historic Mill, Library and Bandstand for this event.
