WOLFEBORO — Join Drew Bush, executive director of the Mount Washington Observatory on Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Wolfeboro Library for his presentation, “The Role of the White Mountains’ Extreme Weather in Three Thrilling Search and Rescue Incidents.”
Hear about daring rescues of people in distress in the White Mountains led by New Hampshire’s Department of Fish and Game and the region’s volunteer search and rescue teams. Whether in the depths of winter or the warmth of summer, the ever-changeable weather in the high peaks can create unexpected hazards. In this talk, Bush will explore how weather played a factor in each situation and examine how rescuers overcame all obstacles to save lives. He’ll draw upon historical records as well as the writings of Nick Howe and Ty Gagne to examine the decisions that led to an incident, their impacts, and how rescuers were able to respond. For some background and a deeper dive into the subject, check out Nicholas Howe’s classic, “Not Without Peril” or Ty Gagne’s books, “The Last Traverse,” “Where You’ll Find Me,” or “The Lions of Winter” available at the library.
Celebrating over 90 years of service to the scientific community and to the public, the Mount Washington Observatory continues its work in the three main areas of activity for which it was founded: to maintain a rigorous program of weather observations and related environmental monitoring, to perform and to collaborate with others in performing basic and applied scientific research, and to participate in public education about weather, climate, and the mountain environment.
This program is free and open to all. For more information on this and other Wolfeboro Public Library programs, call 603-569-2428 or visit wolfeborolibrary.org.
