LACONIA — Susan Ford, Beans & Greens Farm’s assistant garden and nursery manager and floral designer, paid a recent visit to the South Down Home & Garden Club. An invited guest speaker to the group’s May meeting, Ford spoke about which perennials to choose in order to keep color ongoing, fill in shady spots in the garden and reviewed overall care for cost-effective blooms.

Her presentation included considering foliage in the garden, not just the flowers; dead heading, as flowers bloom and die in spring and summer, is critical to producing new growth; petunias and geraniums, both annuals, get “leggy” as the season progresses, and should be pinched back to encourage new growth; and fertilizer, mulch and water are the keys to a successful growing season.

Approximately 30 members of the South Down club attended. For examples of her work, visit beansandgreensfarm.com.
