First UMC Gilford Harvest Supper is Oct. 24

The First United Methodist Church, in Gilford, continues a long tradition of serving bean-hole beans as part of an all-you-can-eat Harvest Supper on Saturday, Oct. 24. Two kinds of beans — yellow-eye and kidney — are par-boiled, seasoned with maple syrup and spices, and lowered into the holes, covered and slow-baked in the ground for 24 hours. Just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, the holes are uncovered and the bean pots brought into the Fellowship Hall for serving. Attendees are invited to watch the process on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., before the dinner seating. Diners are also served all-you-can-eat corned beef, cabbage, boiled potatoes, carrots, rolls, and apple or pumpkin pie. Tickets are available for 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. seatings. Attendees are invited to join this long-standing tradition by calling the church office at 603-524-3289 to make a reservation. Tickets can be picked up at the church just before the meal, or stop by the office from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, to purchase tickets. (Courtesy photo)

GILFORD — The First United Methodist Church in Gilford continues a long tradition of serving the best bean-hole beans in the region as part of an all-you-can-eat Harvest Supper on Saturday, Oct. 24.

For over 50 years, the church has been cooking huge iron pots of beans in holes dug behind the church and lined with red-hot stones. Two kinds of beans (yellow-eye and kidney) are par-boiled, seasoned with maple syrup and spices and lowered into the holes, covered and slow-baked in the ground for 24 hours. Just before 5 p.m. on Saturday the bean pots are uncovered and brought into the Fellowship Hall for serving. Attendees are invited to watch this process on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. just before the dinner seating.

Besides two kinds of beans, diners are also served all-you-can-eat corned beef, cabbage, boiled potatoes, carrots, rolls and apple or pumpkin pie for dessert. Tickets are available for both the 5 p.m. seating and the 6:30 p.m. seating.

Parishioners enthusiastically work to prepare this delicious meal each year by peeling vegetables, tending to the bean-hole beans, setting tables, working in the kitchen, serving the dinner and making homemade pumpkin and apple pies.

Attendees are invited to join this long-standing tradition by calling the church office at 603-524-3289 to make a reservation. Tickets can be picked up at the church just before the meal, or stop by the office on Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to purchase tickets beforehand.
