Rodney C. Collins: Laconia would be proud of a mayor like Cheney

It has been many years since living in Laconia. I fondly recall attending Laconia schools. I remember my father's garage on Water Street and appreciate his name inscribed at the World War II monument at Veterans Square. I take pride in starting a career under Police Chief Bruce Cheney. I respected him as a true leader. He emphasized attention to detail, discipline and prudent decision-making. He advocated adherence to laws, ethics and policies but understood that common sense judgment had to apply to the totality of circumstances. He has integrity and enforced rules consistently. When I was serving another community and he was serving the state, I saw him tirelessly work on coordinating a successful public safety plan. I recall him implementing the state's E-911 system. He relieved concerns and provided a comprehensive plan as the system enhanced communications. His leadership skills and ability to tackle challenges have been valued. From his days as a Marine serving his country, to police chief in Gilford and Laconia, to his management at the state level, Bruce Cheney has honorably served. After serving as city councilor, he wants to serve as mayor. Focus seems to be lost on the roles and responsibilities of mayor. Some suggest Laconia needs a new direction. Not that long ago, Laconia was a declining city in need of revitalization. Today, there are vibrant signs of economic vitality. Lakeport looks restored. From the south end to Weirs Beach, things have improved. Give credit to those who have revived Laconia. Bruce Cheney will be fiscally responsible but he will also guide the city's priorities with wisdom. His experience speaks volumes. Bruce Cheney will be a mayor Laconia will be proud of.
