To The Daily Sun,
I was deeply troubled when I visited Chemung Cemetery, designated as the final resting place for individuals from Laconia State School from 1903 to 1991.
What I witnessed shook me to the core. The absence of proper headstones, replaced instead by cement blocks with plastic name tags haphazardly scattered around the grounds, was a stark reminder of the lack of dignity afforded to those laid to rest there.
This disregard for the memory of the deceased is not just a matter of aesthetics; it strikes at the heart of our values as a society. By allowing such neglect, we are complicit in eroding the very principles upon which our nation was founded.
The sight of these cement blocks piled carelessly only serves to amplify the disrespect shown to these individuals. It is a clear reflection of the unchecked bullying and chaos that seem to pervade our society today.
We cannot stand idly by and allow this indignity to continue. It is incumbent upon us, as members of this community, to demand better. We must hold our town accountable for this violation of basic human decency.
Let us come together to restore dignity to the final resting place of these individuals and, in doing so, reaffirm our commitment to upholding the values of respect and compassion that define us as a society.
