To The Daily Sun,

I write with concern about the special exception application proposing outdoor high impact recreational uses on the Castle in the Clouds property, which would allow events up to 4,000 attendees. I have further concern that this is a request for permanent approval. My objection is based on my firm belief that the Castle grounds, historic landscape, and the surrounding Lakes Region Conservation Trust Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area are all at serious risk.

High impact recreation adversely affects terrain, wildlife, and natural resources. The Castle and abutting LRCT Castle Conservation Area properties have a well-established history, recognized as a place of beauty where bucolic vistas and peaceful enjoyment of nature can be found. That it has remained largely unchanged and unspoiled for over a century is an important part of its appeal. This New Hampshire gem provides a respite from crowds and noise and harsh lights and life’s chaos in our increasingly complex times.

My family were Moultonborough property owners for 64 years; my childhood summers were spent in the woods and water under the watchful eye of Mount Shaw. It was here that I learned to love and respect nature, as did my daughter.

It is important that the abutting LRCT conservation land permits only Low Impact recreation.

Wildlife, water, and other environmental assets know no boundary, nor do noise and light. One (let alone multiple) event(s) with 4,000 attendees will adversely impact this precious resource for generations to come. Traffic during the problematic 2025 Castle Car Show (3,200 attendees) on Route 25 was backed up to Meredith, making travel and emergency access challenging. This Special Exception for up to 4,000 attendees should be denied, for multiple reasons.

Please attend the Moultonborough Zoning Board hearing on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 7 p.m.
