Mary Ann Drapcho: Honor veterans' sacrifices by voting for Kamala Harris

On Nov. 5, we will elect our president. On Nov. 11, Americans will be honoring veterans who fought and sacrificed to save our democracy. Many Americans may be voting for convicted felon Donald Trump. In doing so, they would be endangering our democracy and willfully ignoring the sacrifice made by American veterans to save it. Voters must believe candidates' words. Mr. Trump stated that he would be a dictator on Day 1. He named dictators as leaders he most admires. Journalist Bob Woodward reported that in the early days of COVID Mr. Trump sent kits to Mr. Vladimir Putin. Mr. Trump stated that he will jail his political opponents and that he is willing to use our military to arrest them. Mr. Trump, in words befitting a cruel dictator, stated that immigrants’ blood was “poisoning our country.” Mr. Trump has referred to the free press as “enemies of the people.” Mr. Trump called to terminate our constitution.

On Jan. 6, 2021, after Mr. Trump unleashed a torrent of lies undermining our faith in the 2020 election, a violent mob attacked our Capitol. For hours, as men, women and our country suffered irreparable harm, Mr. Trump, demonstrating character that is befitting of a cruel dictator, refused to intervene. An aide to Mr. Trump stated that Mr. Trump, when told his vice president was in harm’s way, said, “So what?”

On Sept. 22 of this year, more than 700 bipartisan, current and former national security leaders and military officers signed a letter supporting Kamala Harris. The letter stated that Kamala Harris “defends American’s democratic ideals,” and that “the election is a choice between serious democracy and authoritarianism." Like our veterans, love fiercely and fight for democracy. Work and vote for Kamala Harris.
