Did readers know that every 10 years, after the Census, New Hampshire redraws its voting districts and maps — a process that shapes how our communities are represented in Concord and D.C.? Right now, that responsibility rests with elected officials in the New Hampshire State Legislature.

That creates an obvious conflict of interest. When politicians control the lines of their own districts, it can erode public trust — regardless of party. And that creates doubt in the election process.

There is a better way. An independent redistricting commission would use clear, transparent standards to draw fair maps that reflect real communities, not political advantage. It would help keep towns and regions together, reduce partisan influence, and ensure that every single voter’s voice carries equal weight.

Fair maps are not a partisan issue — they are a democratic one. If we want elections that truly reflect the will of the people, we need a process that voters can trust. This will preserve democracy in our state.

New Hampshire has a chance to strengthen confidence in our elections and protect fair representation for all. It is not too early to tell NH state reps and senators that readers favor a fair independent redistricting commission to draw the maps.
