To The Daily Sun,

On September 11, voters in Laconia, New Hampton and Sanbornton will choose their Belknap County commissioner (District 1) for the next few years.

The incumbent chairman of the commission, running for re-election from District 1, is a successful businessman with an MBA degree. Because of that background and education, I naively thought that he would be a great county commissioner, highly protective of the county’s taxpayers, true to principles of limited government, and a careful steward of the assets of the county. Unfortunately, I was very wrong.

In my two years as a state representative from Gilford and Meredith, I have served on the Belknap County Delegation, which has brought me into close contact with the county commissioners and the county administration on budgetary and other stewardship matters. To say that I was disappointed in their level of incompetence would be an understatement.

Either of the two candidates running against the incumbent would, in my opinion, be much better than what we have now. But we must choose.

The City of Laconia is the largest municipality in our county but has not had a resident as a county commissioner in several years. Tom Tardif, a former mayor of Laconia, actually reads and understands the laws governing the county and he is strong-willed enough to expect the county commission and county administration to follow them.

Accordingly, I strongly urge voters in Laconia, New Hampton and Sanbornton to vote for Tom Tardif for Belknap County commissioner.
