The soon-to-be-former mayor appointed all on the Human Relations Committee (HRC) with the intent of promoting inclusion, dialogue and understanding among residents. Yet, in practice, the committee has shown a lack of transparency in both its operations and decision-making. The mayor, along with his hand-picked committee, established the rules for transparency, yet its reluctance to openly share deliberations, processes and reasoning undermines its very mission.
A clear example of this issue is the committee’s handling of the so-called “God Pods.” The HRC meetings according to their own bylaws: “Minutes will be kept for all committee and subcommittee meetings ... will notice all meetings at least 24 hours in advance and post minutes within five business days through the City Manager’s office.” Bylaws purposefully add, “meetings will not be taped or electronically recorded.” Odd thing to put in bylaws when transparency is required by law. Also have not seen any minutes for at least three months.
Questions remain about long-term accountability, funding and whether these units would attract individuals from outside Laconia, putting additional strain on local resources. Rather than providing clear answers and allowing for a robust public discussion, the HRC has kept details vague, leaving many citizens worried that decisions are being made behind closed doors in violation of state government transparency statute 91-A, and without proper community input.
This lack of transparency is troubling, given that this is yet another attempt in a seemingly endless string of actions showing the council’s unwillingness to ensure openness and accountability. Laconia deserves better leadership. Laconia cannot afford councilors who hide information from the very people they are supposed to serve.
Laconia’s residents deserve leaders who will listen, communicate honestly, and put taxpayers and families first, not more closed-door decisions and blue sky promises.
