To The Daily Sun,

For one to say, “Capitalism is doomed because of finite natural resources,” says more about them than what they hope to say. That something is finite doesn’t mean there is an end to it, life itself is finite but it still goes on, the universe itself is finite though we nor others will ever ‘know’ that. But that capitalism is doomed is not because of lack of resources. It is capitalism which has brought about the world we are living in today. It was a desire for profit that Columbus was given ships. Capitalism can exist within socialism; to propose that capitalism is doomed is to propose that communism or despotism takeover. The "communist" Soviet Union lasted some 69 years, it did so only by extreme duress to say the least. If capitalism fails do not cheer as its replacement has always failed horribly, but slowly.

I found joy to drive over the Mackinaw Bridge not long after having served in West Germany. East Germany had first erected what amounts to cattle fencing, as more sought to leave a higher stronger one was built, when it didn’t suffice the communist state erected a 12 foot steel fence, land mine strips, patrol roads and guard towers meant to keep its people in. I saw and touched them visiting a friends farm there. To live in a nation which builds roads on which we may travel unimpeded and without having to have permission isn’t such a terrible price to pay to live in a capitalist nation.

Capitalism has always been a part of being human, that humans for the most part are social; little thought is required to know the two go hand in hand. Communism is something the hippies tried; it requires the individual to be secondary/ submissive to the commune/state. That is all well and good until a decision must be made which isn’t predetermined or unanimously agreed on. All the grain and produce farmed goes to one general storehouse, and who remembers the last one who’s share of the chicken was the neck. Better one works for themselves and achieve their goals then to submit to the directives of the bureaucrat implementing them.

In a world of eight billion people and living in a nation with open access to information, one needs only to settle else where for a time to come to appreciate our country.

In 2008, as much as 157.8 trillion cubic feet of methane hydrate is estimated to be undiscovered in the Alaska North Slope area by the United States Geological Survey (https://geology.com/articles/methane-hydrates/) .

At the 2009 rate of U.S. consumption (about 22.8 Tcf per year), the U.S. possesses 2,552 Tcf of natural gas, enough to supply approximately 110 years of use. Shale gas resource and production estimates increased between 2010 & 2011 (https://geology.com/energy/shale-gas/ - https://geology.com/usgs/oil-shale/)

The United States is thought to have 1.5–2.6 trillion barrels (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shale_oil) of shale oil available.
