Gene F. Danforth: The word 'democracy' does not appear in the Constitution

Article IV, section 4 of the United States Constitution states “The United States shall guarantee to every State in the Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against invasion, and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the legislature cannot convene) against domestic Violence."

Someone failed here.

Chief Justice John Marshall of the early 1800s Supreme Court said “between a balanced Republic and democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos”.

If we were to search the Constitution for the word democracy, we would not find it. Why? Well, Alexander Hamilton answers, “we are a Republican Government, Real Liberty is never found in despotism or in extremes of Democracy.” So where did this idea of a democracy come from? Democrats are joyful in their praise of it. A few Republicans have uttered this misconception.

Woodrow Wilson praised making the world safe for democracy and sent our boys off to fight a war already winding down, which bolstered the Bolsheviks. FDR made the world safer for communism. Our republic gradually found itself invaded with a new progressive ideology.

In a speech titled “Betrayal of the Democratic Party” given on Jan. 25, 1932 by a former Democrat presidential candidate, Alfred E. Smith stated that the Democrat Party Platform and the Socialist Platform were identical.

Let's look at some who boast of Democracy. “according to Lenin, socialism and democracy are indivisible...the essence of perestroika lies in the fact that it unites socialism with democracy and revives the Lenin concept...we want more socialism,and therefore, more democracy.” – Mikhail Gorbachev.

Stalin stated 'America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold; its patriotism, its morality and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse within.”

Mao Tse-Tung stated, “the democratic revolution is the necessary preparation for the socialist revolution, and the socialist revolution is inevitable sequel to the democratic revolution. The ultimate aim for which all communists strive is to bring about a socialist and communist society”

Karl Marx said “all it would take for communism to flourish is simple democracy.” – Communist Manifesto.

James Madison, often referred to as the father of the Constitution, wrote “we have staked the whole future of American civilization not upon the power of the government...far from it. We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.”

In 2013 a New Hampshire Democratic legislator called for making libertarians and conservatives less welcome: ”what we can do is make the environment here so unwelcoming that some will choose not to come, and some may move.” She did not say how far they should go in stripping conservatives of their freedoms. Is she a native? New Hampshire deserves better.
