To The Daily Sun,

Much has been written about how little we pay in taxes. We only have a property tax, but the rate of that tax can reach 20%-30% of income for the retired. Just take the property tax and divide it by income. Then compare it to your federal income tax rate. For a retired person, the New Hampshire town/state tax rate can be double the federal rate. We hear about the cost of housing, but a large component of that is the property tax.

In Gilmanton there is a petition warrant article to increase the elderly exemption. It has been stated that Gilmanton has a liberal exemption now. Ask someone on social security if that helps. The increase is not much, but it is something for people who have supported their town and schools for 20, 30, 40, 50 years. Isn’t it about time they are given a little break?
