Erik Swenson: Choose candidate Christian Urrutia for healthcare reform

As a Dartmouth physician and educator who cares deeply about my patients, the future of healthcare, and the young physicians I help train, I support Christian Urrutia for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Previously, I worked in the Department of Veterans Affairs for four decades as a pulmonary and critical care physician and saw firsthand how a system can cover everyone without exorbitant costs or denials of care. While not perfect, it was a privilege to work in an environment free from administrative barriers to patient access. Christian Urrutia champions true Medicare for All, which is not only more equitable but lowers long-term expenditures by cutting private insurance administrative bloat and ensuring patients receive early, comprehensive treatment.

Unfortunately, healthcare clarity is missing from much of this primary field. While not every opponent outright opposes reform, too many candidates are waffling with evasive slogans like "Medicare for All... for those who want it," or muddying the waters by claiming to support both single-payer reform and a corporate public option simultaneously. This strategic hedging confuses voters and sidesteps the systemic changes we urgently need.

We do not need more political caution. Christian Urrutia is a candidate with the courage to champion genuine, uncompromised healthcare reform. If readers care about healthcare reform, vote for Christian Urrutia on Tuesday.
