To The Daily Sun,

This month representatives of tourism gathered in Concord to discuss what is happening in their industry. Tourism is New Hampshire’s second largest industry and a major economic driver.

Owners of resorts, restaurants, and attractions shared their assessment. One lakes resort owner felt that business was down because of higher prices.

It was interesting to learn the perspectives of the candidates for governor, Joyce Craig and Kelly Ayotte, since the governor is first and foremost the ambassador and the face of NH.

Craig, with hands-on experience as mayor of Manchester, acknowledged the economic impact visitors have. She supports the state’s investment in marketing, recognizing that every $1 spent returns $18 benefiting both income and jobs statewide.

Ayotte referenced her time in D.C. and said she saw her role as providing a regulatory framework which would let businesses thrive. She understood that the three self-funded agencies that drive tourism — Parks, Fish and Game, Forests and Land — were struggling, but she would not want to increase fees to support them.

Curious, I asked a business owner if tourism was slowing. He replied by sharing a question from a Massachusetts couple who visits our area several times a year for seasonal activities, concerts, and events. They spoke about campaign signs which said, “Don’t Mass Up NH,” and asked him whether they would be welcomed if Kelly Ayotte were elected governor. Ouch.

As I drove home, I realized these signs were prominently placed on the grounds of some tourist businesses. I don’t think I’d feel welcomed either, and would spend my leisure and money elsewhere.

A company’s culture starts with the chief executive officer. Will NH embrace a culture which insults our best customers and tells them they’re not welcomed here?

Based on their proven commitments and resumes, I’d choose Joyce Craig for NH’s CEO.
