To The Daily Sun,
I write today in support of the Senate District 2 candidacy of my former coworker, Kurt Webber. I first met Kurt when we hired him to teach computer classes at now Lakes Region Community College. Hiring Kurt was easy based on his skills as a former teacher at his alma mater, West Point, before retiring from the Army. Two years later, Kurt came to my office to inform me that he was planning to apply to the Army to be reinstated to active duty status for the express purpose of serving in the combat zone of Iraq.
I was taken aback that a dedicated and decorated veteran, having already served over 20 years honorably and now retired, would come out of retirement to serve again. But that is the man Kurt Webber is. He joined the Army to serve his fellow Americans and did so with distinction. But he felt in his core he still had more to give, thus his decision to apply for reinstatement with the specific goal of bringing his Green Beret experience and skills to the war effort. The college granted Kurt a leave of absence, the Army approved his return to active duty and he departed for the Middle East where he served a year in the combat zone. One might ask why would a man leave the safety and security of his well-earned retirement to return to a combat zone? That person doesn't know Kurt Webber. Kurt meets and exceeds every definition I have of a true American patriot who continues to put service to others above self.
In this current political climate, nationally, statewide and locally, we need more Kurt Webbers. Please consider my friend and former coworker for a vote for District 2 senator.Â
