To The Daily Sun,
The recent loss of Emily Sotelo on Mount Lafayette reminded me of two books that should be compulsory reading for anyone, experienced or otherwise, who plan to do any winter hiking in the White Mountains or any similar terrain.
They both cover the often treacherous weather conditions that can quickly turn deadly, and a comprehensive study of the thought processes that sometimes lead to a fatal decision to proceed on a climb. These thought processes could also apply to anyone who enjoys pushing the edge in other endeavors. The books are "The Last Traverse" and "Where You Will Find Me," both authored by Ty Gagne and available at the Laconia Public Library. Stay safe.

I've heard Ty Gagne speak and he is an excellent speaker on risk-taking. I can only second Mr. Lockwood's comments and regret the loss of life of a young hiker who seemingly thought she knew it all.
