To The Daily Sun,
If Newfound School District voters want their school taxes to go up 20% or more next year then just stay home on Tuesday, March 11. The only way to keep the current school tax cap at 2% is for everyone to vote "no" on articles 8 and 9 on the school ballot on March 11. The group that petitioned these articles will be at the polls voting "yes." Voters are needed to defeat this group. Article 8 if passed will remove the tax cap giving unlimited power for the school to raise taxes. Article 9 changes the cap from 2% to 5%. If Article 8 doesn’t pass, they hope Article 9 will pass so they can still take more of taxpayer money. The tax cap requires the school to propose a budget that does not raise taxes more than 2%. They must come to the voters with justification and an override vote at the deliberative session is required if the school feels it needs more money than the cap allows. They would rather be able to spend as much of taxpayers' money as they want without them having a vote. If the tax cap is removed, the school can propose a budget that increases tax bills by any amount, 20%, 70%, or more, too bad for residents. And don’t be fooled, Article 9 is also dangerous. At the 2% cap it will take 36 years to double taxes. At 5% it will double in 16 years. Please vote to keep control in the hands of the people. On March 11, vote "no" on articles 8 and 9 of the school ballot. Even if readers are not registered, New Hampshire allows voters to register at the polls.
