David Miller: The people are calling for better governance

United, the people are calling for better governance. At first glance, we appear divided. We are portrayed as being "left" or "right" of the middle, incapable of having diverse beliefs, and in opposition to each other in all areas. This is a fallacy — a mistaken belief — concocted to concentrate political power into two distinct parties. There are those of us who want our democratic republic to evolve, to thrive, whereas there is a vocal minority who would prefer to end democracy and shape the country to their own system of beliefs.

Ideologues put their own beliefs ahead of the Constitution which binds our republic together:

• Roe v. Wade never created a right to an abortion, it prevented government interference in women's private health decisions until viability — independent life — of a fetus.
• The Second Amendment never created an individual right to carry weapons, it prevented federal authorities from disarming states.
• A violent assault on a nation's capital in an attempt to overturn a democratic election is insurrection, regardless of the intent of each participant. The individuals responsible for triggering the assault and those responsible for stopping the assault that fail to take action are liable for their conduct. Acting to cover up or condone (offering aid or comfort to) insurrection makes you an accomplice to insurrection and unfit for public office.

A vast majority are tired of malfeasance in office and, unfortunately, most citizens do not know how to fix it. Even worse, this ignorance enables corrupted officials to feign righteousness as they betray the faith of their supporters, exacerbating existing problems into full-blown crises. We can conserve what makes the United States unique (eldest surviving democracy) without obstructing essential progress towards equality and justice for all.
