Chris Fay: Certain candidates do have taxpayer interests in mind

Wednesday night, New Hampshire Legislative candidates Lois Kessin, Marcia Hayward, Denise Riley, and Kurt Webber, along with U.S. House of Representative candidate Maura Sullivan, met at Leavitt Park for an informal discussion of their issues in the upcoming elections.

After informative introductory remarks by the candidates, questions from an audience of about 50 local citizens took place. Some of the issues raised were voting security, funding of public schools, housing, and the environment. Discussion was lively at times but well-informed, so much thanks go to Tony Felch for organizing the event. It was my sense that the candidate’s felt voting is secure in NH based on a long history of being first in the nation to vote, but we need to remain alert. There is consensus the state should pay far more toward the cost of public education, and reduce property taxes. Caring for the environment, such as water quality, is valuable and important to our economy. There is agreement that housing availability and costs are outside the ability of many new homeowners to pay.

I was impressed that these candidates have our interests in mind. The most important conclusion was to strongly encourage everyone to get out and vote because changing our representatives is the road to re-examining the issues facing us.
