To the editor,

A few people working together can often accomplish good things. The traffic island at the junction of Province Street and South Main Street is a main entry into Laconia, and it is the starting point for the parade route: it was in desperate need of attention. Lisa Boisselle-Bancroft and I have planted the spot in the past as individuals, as have others, but it always proved difficult to maintain. This year Lisa and I joined forces to improve the appearance of the area and show a bit of neighborhood spirit and pride as an Adopt a Spot. We began with spring cleanup and were happy to invest our time and funds once again. We also invited others in our area to participate — anyone offering to help would be considered a true Friend of the South End.

We were delighted with the positive response, and we wish to thank those who stepped forward to help with time, watering, resources or funds to ensure the planting. In addition to our husbands, Stephen Bancroft and Steve Gove, the following were of great support: Jacob Bancroft, Roland Boisselle/Laconia Welding, The Hair Factory/Joanna DeCesare, Opechee Garden Club, Paradise Island, Shang Hai Restaurant, Quik Laundry, Janet Shosa, Smith Orchard, Pat Roth/Vista Foods, Wilkinson-Beane Simoneau-Paquette, and the Laconia Public Works Department who provided us with some sorely needed loam for the site.

We hope the Friends of the South End accomplished a good thing, something that can expand perhaps, and that the island planting will be a pleasant view for those who walk or drive past it.
