To the editor,

The study of our Police Department, and how it compares with towns with similar populations as Sanbornton, is faulted because of the following situation. Sanbornton is impacted by the huge development of the exit 20 area in Tilton. If you think it’s not, you are not being realistic. Much of the needed police coverage in Sanbornton is related to the extra commuter traffic from Winnisquam Bridge, across Hunkins Pond Rd., up to the school, and over to Rte 127. It is also impacted with commuter traffic from Lancaster Hill up to the square to Gulf Rd. and on to School St., or March Rd. — the latter having a major head on collision last week at the corner of 132 & Gulf Rd.

Our town has needs from the police department for our section of Interstate 93, which call on the police and the fire departments continuously. Belmont and Laconia traffic also affect us, so we are surrounded by growth and traffic daily. There are many other police needs but traffic cannot be considered trivial any more.

It was mentioned in recent letters to the editors, and in editorials in area papers that Sanbornton writers need to stop name calling against its fellow citizens, who may or may not be on Boards and committees. It is very unfair, unkind and generally in poor taste to name town officials, and diagnose whether they need medical treatment, as did a recent writer, who was writing about the police department budget.

Stick to the budget with factual and reasonable analysis for budget cuts, and leave the medical diagnosis to our area Doctors. Being kind to each other will go a long way toward getting the support you want, rather than insults. Lets get back the “country spirit” that inspired so many people to move here in recent years. Don’t take that away from those who have made Sanbornton a great place to live.
