To The Daily Sun,
I'd like to apologize for the harsh opinions I voiced (Laconia Daily Sun, Friday, August 4) about President Trump's characterization of New Hampshire as a "drug-infested den."
While I'd prefer to characterize the Granite State as recovery-infused rather than drug-infested, I made my comments to The Laconia Daily Sun with the same disrespectful tone I had criticized in the president.
My opinions were expressed out of frustration just days after the President's Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis asked Mr. Trump to declare a national emergency in response to an epidemic that kills 142 Americans each day, a death toll equal to September 11th every three weeks.
Frustration, however, is no excuse. My words should have been more optimistic and thoughtful. It is only by working together that we will find positive solutions to the opioid crisis.
