To the editor,
As Commander of American Legion Post 33 in Meredith I received a bill last week for police work done at the Moving Wall. I forwarded this bill on to Marie Valliere, President of "The Moving Wall" Committee as Post 33 was only involved in the insurance of this non-profit effort. We had many members volunteer their time working to make this well deserved recognition of the Vietnam war casualties a reality.
No one got paid, there were no sales to make a profit, only some pins, medals and T-shirts sold at as close to cost as possible. Many area merchants gave donations to cover costs of this endeavor, which was 24 hours a day for 6 days.
The National Guard donated their time doing security work and the town police doing some needed traffic and security. Our Post and the Town of Meredith both benefited with good publicity from this event. This was a win-win situation for the town and I for one take exception that the town did not donate the cost of the police presence like most all the businesses and residents did for this patriotic endeavor.
So please Town of Meredith, do the right thing, cancel this bill and donate the cost of the police work.
Bob Kennelly, Commander Post 33
