Two children reported missing from Berlin late Thursday night were found safely in Keene Friday morning, authorities said.
NH State Police issued an Amber Alert for the 4-year-old and 1-year-old at about 4 a.m. Friday. They had last been seen in Berlin around 8 p.m. Thursday with their biological father, Dustin Mark Duren, 37, according to the Amber Alert.
Around 10:30 a.m., State Police canceled the Amber Alert and said the children had been safely located. A spokesperson for the NH Attorney General's Office confirmed that they were found safely and that Dustin Duren was in police custody in Keene. The white 2017 Subaru Impreza he was reportedly driving was seen being towed from a parking lot on Key Road in Keene.
Thomas Randall, who was working at the nearby Five Guys restaurant, described the police response at the scene.
“There was like one cop car pulled up over there in front of the Applebee’s ... and then I saw three pull in, like, speeding fast, and they parked in a line,” he said. “... They all jumped out of their cars, like, weapons drawn ... they were like using the front car as a barricade for like, five minutes.”
He said he saw one of the children retrieved from the Impreza, and Duren quickly taken into custody.
“They were on him and then they had him apprehended, and then he was gone," Randall said.
Further information was not immediately available.
Authorities are also investigating a suspicious death in Berlin they say is connected to the Amber Alert. Police responded to a home on Main Street in that city around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, and found Caitlyn Naffziger, 31, deceased. Naffziger is the children's mother and had been in a relationship with Duren, Michael Garrity, spokesperson for the AG's office, said.
