LACONIA — Police are investigating a shooting Sunday morning on Church Street. Chief Matt Canfield said one adult is dead.
Nobody has yet been charged, but Canfield stressed he does not believe there is any danger to the community.
“We are currently investigating a reported shooting at 108 Church St.,” Canfield said Sunday afternoon. “I cannot confirm nor deny if it is a homicide at this point.”
Laconia Police dispatch confirmed officers responded to 108 Church at 11:42 a.m. on Jan. 11. Canfield said authorities responded to a report of a shooting “late morning,” and at about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, he said he was just leaving after being at the scene all day. Laconia firefighters initially responded to the report, but left shortly after.
Canfield could not say if the shooting was purposeful or accidental, nor whether those involved knew or lived with one another.
Canfield said police are currently investigating everything about how the shooting occurred, including who shot the gun.
“There are a couple different theories,” Canfield said.
Reports from the scene indicate lots of law enforcement officers, both uniformed and in plain clothes, including State Troopers and city police. At least two Laconia Police SUVs and one State Police vehicle were at the scene.
Along the side of the home was a McDonald’s delivery order sitting on the steps. The shades were pulled down in the windows on one side, and a piece of fabric was draped across a larger window on the inside.
As of 6 p.m. on Sunday, police confirmed nobody had been taken into custody.
“We do not have anybody in custody right now, and we don’t plan on it tonight,” Canfield said.
Laconia Police are leading the investigation and are working with the State Police Major Crime Unit and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
