LACONIA — The Lakes Region Sled Dog Club said Monday that it has canceled the Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby, originally scheduled for this coming weekend, due to poor conditions.
Organizers said recent warm weather had softened the existing snow pack, and that the forecast left little hope that a race track could be restored in time for the event.
A silver lining to the cancelation is that the money raised for this year's purse will roll over to the 2024 race, and that a larger purse is expected to attract more racers from further afield, who look at available prize money as a means to offset the expense of traveling with a team of sled dogs.
