05-10 Conger

GILFORD — Alger Conger, a Laconia resident serving as a member of the Missions Committee of the First United Methodist Church, is facing a Class A felony charge after police received a tip that he is a registered sexual offender who should not be involved with minor children.

The tip came after Alger appeared in a photo last month in The Laconia Daily Sun, posing with a group of young people who were sorting items donated for charity.

Gilford police arrested Conger without incident yesterday after speaking with the people involved, according to Detective Sgt. Chris Jacques.

The telephone at the church went unanswered yesterday and an email to the church’s pastor was not immediately returned. Conger did not have a listed telephone number.

Conger, 80, was convicted in 2004 of aggravated felonious sexual assault of a person under 13 years of age, along with two counts of felonious sexual assault.

State law (RSA 632-A:10) outlines the prohibition from child care service for those convicted of any felonious offense involving child sexual abuse images, physical assault, or sexual assault, if “he or she knowingly undertakes employment or volunteer service involving the care, instruction or guidance of minor children.”

Conger was arrested and released on $5,000 personal recognizance bail, with arraignment scheduled in Belknap County Superior Court on May 24 at 1:30 p.m.

A Class A felony potentially carries a maximum sentence of 7½ to 15 years in prison.
