Doug Sargent's tenure as Public Works Director here lasted less than two months. Hired in late February to replace long-time road agent Albert Cross, Sargent is said to have resigned last week.
Selectboard Chairman Lana Dearborn yesterday declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding Sargent's departure, other than to confirm that he had resigned.
Succeeding Frank Tilton, Sargent headed Laconia's Department of Public Works for nine months in 2004. His dismissal by City Manager Eileen Cabanel caused a firestorm on City Council and drove a huge wedge between her and councilors Judy Krahulec (Ward 1), Jim Cowan (Ward 4) and Armand Bolduc (Ward 6). All three had a high opinion of Sargent and his work.
Before coming to Laconia, Sargent served for three years as Public Works Director in Ossipee, resigning when the Board of Selectmen in that town raised the prospect of taking disciplinary measures against him. He was also chief of engineering and technical services in the Department of Public Works in Wolfeboro.
Sargent retired from the United States Air Force with a rank of major. He lives in Northwood.
