WOLFEBORO — Police have charged Demosthenes Macheras, of Pelham, with helping another boater flee the scene of a crash in Winter Harbor last year.

Macheras, 69, was arrested in Pelham on Friday morning, according to a press release issued by the Department of Safety, and charged with simple assault and hindering apprehension, both misdemeanors.

The charges relate to an incident that occurred around 11 p.m. on Aug. 12, 2023, when a 50-foot SeaRay bowrider collided with a dock and a boat tied to the dock and ended up on the rocks nearby in Winter Harbor.

Investigators believe the operator of the SeaRay, as well as the passengers, were able to leave the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement thanks to the assistance of Macheras, who is alleged to have picked them up in his own vessel, a 1997 Well Craft, which was later found docked at a home in Tuftonboro.

No other arrests have been made in relation to the incident.

Macheras is scheduled to appear on Tuesday, June 4, in Ossipee District Court.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Marine Patrol Sgt. Nicholas Haroutunian at nicholas.m.haroutunian@dos.nh.gov, or at 603-227-2112.
