ALTON — The cause of a fire Wednesday that resulted in no injuries remains under investigation, according to the fire department.

Firefighters with the Alton Fire Department responded to a reported building fire in the area of Old Wolfeboro Road near Route 28, at 3:43 p.m., on March 18, according to a department release.

A large volume of smoke was visible from Mount Major Highway, and firefighters received a report of heavy smoke and fire at a large, three-bay detached garage. Firefighters called for additional assistance.

At the time of the fire, firefighters were already at two other medical calls in the small town on the east side of Lake Winnipesaukee. Upon their arrival, firefighters observed heavy fire in the building, and began defensive fire operations. At the time of the fire, firefighters were able to confirm there were no humans or animals inside the building.

Crews brought the fire under control within one hour, and remained at the scene, overhauling and extinguishing hot spots, until being cleared at about 6:15 p.m.

“Alton Fire Department would like to thank our mutual aid partners and their support,” Chief James Reinert wrote.

Alton was assisted by Alton police and department of public works; Belmont Fire Department; Laconia Fire; Gilford Fire; Gilmanton Fire; New Durham Fire; Farmington Fire; Wolfeboro Fire; Tuftonboro Fire; Pittsfield Fire; New Hampshire Electric Co-op; and Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid. The Strafford Fire Department provided station coverage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Reinert or Deputy Chief Evan Turcotte at 603-875-0222.
