A Laconia man who is an executive at Laconia Savings Bank will replace long-time Belknap County Treasurer Robert Corbin, who is resigning, at the end of March. Michael Muzzey has been Corbin's deputy for about six months and the County Convention, following the recommendation of the three County Commissioners, on Tuesday night appointed him to the top job.
Muzzey is executive vice-president and chief information officer at Laconia Savings Bank. He has worked for the bank for 32 years.
Corbin, who lives in Belmont, was elected to his 9th two-year term in 2004. He said yesterday that he was resigning the position because he has been retired for a while and he and his wife, Connie, would like to do more traveling. "After 18 years," he said, "it's time for somebody else."
Corbin worked at People's Bank in Laconia for 31 years.
"That's my plan," was Muzzey's response when asked if he intends to stand for election to his own two-year term as Treasurer in the fall. He said he was made aware when Corbin asked him to be his deputy there was a good chance he would be filling out a part of Corbin's final term.
Muzzey has tapped a fellow Laconia Savings Bank executive to be the new Deputy Treasurer. Marc Rayburn is currently vice-president and controller at the local institution and Muzzey said he has know Rayburn for 25 years.
Muzzey and Rayburn will be sworn in their new positions during a ceremony at Belknap County Superior Court on March 20.
The new Treasurer lives on North Main Street with his wife Jennifer. The couple has three adult children.
