Effective immediately, the Belmont Board of Selectmen have modified the No Thru Trucking ordinance on Concord Street between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. This modification will last until the construction at the intersection of Routes 106 and 140 has been suspended for the winter.
The new ordinance will allow all traffic, including commercial vehicles that are heading southbound on Route 106, to take a right on to Main Street, up Concord Street and then take a right onto Route 106. Because traffic will be diverted through a residential area, the Belmont Police Department will aggressively enforce speed limits and the ordinance modification at all times.
"The Town of Belmont, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and Weaver Brother’s Construction, realize that there is a large amount of traffic that flows through the Village area and have been working together to help to alleviate the problem," said Chief Vinnie Baiocchetti. "We understand that traffic will be held up for a bit but people need to have some patience and understanding. This section of roadway has seen a significant buildup of traffic over the past several years."
"The Police Department would also like to remind people that while they are on Gilmanton Road in front of the Belmont Fire Station to not stop and block the entrance so that emergency vehicles can get in and out," said Baiocchetti. "Also, trying to by-pass the traffic by going up Main Street to Route 106 and taking a left hand turn is a violation and people will be summonsed, costing violators $57.60."
